Poker Chip Guide - Complied by Nevada Scott, our resident expert

Poker Chip Guide

ABS Composite Poker Chips

Advantages

  • Inexpensive  Quality chips at a great prices
  • Indestructible   ABS chips will last a lifetime of regular use
  • Design friendly  Graphics and designs are sharp and defined when stamped onto the ABS Composite material

Disadvantages

  • Feel  These chips don't have the same soft feel as a real casino chip
  • Sound  Because of their metal insert and ABS material, these chips have a more clanky sound than an actual  casino chip.

ABS chips are made from a plastic polymer and are considerably cheaper than their clay cousins.  They are a good choice for the home game because they look good, require no maintenance, and are virtually indestructible and designed to last a lifetime.  Because they contain a metal insert to give them the weight of actual casino chips they have a more clanky sound than actual casino chips.

Clay Poker Chips

Clay Poker Chips

Advantages

  • Feel  Clay chips have the same feel as an actual casino chip.
  • Sound  Clay chips have the same characteristic sound as an actual casino chip.
  • Quality  Clay chips are on par with the quality of an actual casino chip.
  • Stackability  Clay chips can be stacked higher than their ABS counterparts.

Disadvantages

  • Cost  Clay chips are more expensive to make and can cost considerably more than ABS chips.
  • Durability  Clay chips can be scratched more easily than ABS chips.  The degree to which these scratches are noticeable vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.  Clay chips can also be broken if dropped on a hard surface or intentionally abused.  Clay chips will also need to be oiled to maintain them.  The casino life of a chip is typically from 5 to 7 years.  Such a chip used less frequently in a home game may last 10 or more years.
  • Confusion  There is no such thing as a pure clay chip.  If a chip were 100% clay, then it would be extremely fragile and break very easily.  Clay chips actually contain a very small amount of clay and are commonly referred to as a clay composite chip.  The percent composition of clay will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Higher clay percentage is not always an indicator of a superior chip.  Also, some unscrupulous dealers may advertise a clay composite chip that is actually an ABS chip.  To add to the confusion, a majority of the inexpensive clay chips on the market contain a metal slug which cuts down on the cost of the chip because less clay composite material is needed.  These type of chips, however, will not sound like actual casino chips because they will make a metallic clanky sound.

Real clay chips are designed to match the same high quality as the chips used in an actual casino.  The quality as well as the price can vary greatly.  One can pay as much as $3 per chip for a very high quality American made chip to 12 cents a chip for a foreign made chip that contains a metal insert.

At 1ofaKindStuff we offer a clay chip with no metal insert which we believe is the highest quality import chip on the market.  For those folks that demand a US made chip, we offer Nevada Jacks chips which are in our opinion one of the finest American made chips on the market.
